Indonesia's Mount Ibu erupts again, spewing thick, gray ash high into the air

  • By EDNA TARIGAN - Associated Press

Indonesia’s Mount Ibu has erupted again and spewed thick, gray ash and dark clouds 7,000 meters (16,000 feet) into the air, officials say. The volcano that is located on an island in the eastern North Maluku province erupted for more than six minutes on Sunday, according to the chief of Indonesia’s Geology Agency. A column of ash could be seen rising high into the sky. It spewed out material including volcanic ash and sand. At the time of the eruption, the wind was blowing to the west and volcanic material was carried by the wind down to a field where residents evacuated after previous eruptions were living. Mount Ibu has been continually erupting since early May.

Unusual mix of possible candidates line up for Chicago's first school board elections this fall

  • By SOPHIA TAREEN - Associated Press

The nation’s third-largest city is preparing for its first school board elections and the slate of potential candidates includes progressive activists, an afterschool squash program leader and a Grammy-winning rapper. The down ballot November race comes after decades of activism and months of legislative squabbles over control of Chicago's public schools. But the messiest part of Chicago’s newest democratic body is yet to come. The election is complicated, with a temporary hybrid board that's hard to convey to voters. Special interests are already gearing up. And there are lingering questions about how a 21-member board, triple the current board's size, will run.

With home prices up more than 50%, some states try to contain property taxes

  • By DAVID A. LIEB - Associated Press

Rising home values have led to higher real estate taxes around the U.S. Now many states are looking to provide relief to frustrated residents. New laws enacted in Alabama, Colorado and Wyoming will limit the growth in tax-assessed values for homeowners. A Kansas special session on tax cuts is to start June 18. Nebraska also could hold a special session on property taxes. Proposals to curb property taxes also will appear on ballots this year in Colorado and Georgia. The movement comes as single-family home prices have risen more than 50% during the past five years.

Oil producers led by Saudis face a decision on whether to extend production cuts as oil prices lag

  • By DAVID McHUGH - AP Business Writer

Saudi Arabia and allied oil producing countries face a decision on whether to extend production cuts. And that could push oil prices higher as the summer travel season increases demand for fuel and as the U.S. presidential election contest heats up. The OPEC+ alliance, made up of members of the Vienna-based producers cartel and allied countries, including Russia, is holding an online meeting but the cuts in question are a matter for a smaller group led by Saudi Arabia. Those countries previously cut some 2.2 million barrels per day to support prices that are weaker than the Saudis and other coalition members would like.

Democrats wanted an agreement on using artificial intelligence. It went nowhere

  • DAN MERICA - Associated Press

As campaigns nationwide experimented with artificial intelligence earlier this year, the Democratic National Committee approached their committees with a request: Sign onto guidelines to use the technology in a “responsible” way. The draft agreement, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, was hardly full of revolutionary ideas. But the plan went nowhere. The proposal’s demise highlighted both internal divisions over campaign tactics and the party’s uncertainty over how to best use AI.

Rescue crews work to free people trapped under a collapsed apartment building in Istanbul

  • AP

Television images show emergency workers trying to rescue people trapped under a collapsed apartment building in Istanbul. Firefighters shifted rubble by hand from the flattened three-story building in Kucukcekmece on the city’s European side on Sunday. Two injured people were pulled from the debris, broadcaster CNN Turk reported. The Istanbul governor’s office said the structure collapsed at 8:40 a.m. local time. The cause was not immediately clear. More than 59,000 people were killed last year when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of southern Turkey and neighboring Syria. The disaster highlighted the poor enforcement of building regulations in Turkey.
