With home prices up more than 50%, some states try to contain property taxes

  • By DAVID A. LIEB - Associated Press

Rising home values have led to higher real estate taxes around the U.S. Now many states are looking to provide relief to frustrated residents. New laws enacted in Alabama, Colorado and Wyoming will limit the growth in tax-assessed values for homeowners. A Kansas special session on tax cuts is to start June 18. Nebraska also could hold a special session on property taxes. Proposals to curb property taxes also will appear on ballots this year in Colorado and Georgia. The movement comes as single-family home prices have risen more than 50% during the past five years.

Oil producers led by Saudis face a decision on whether to extend production cuts as oil prices lag

  • By DAVID McHUGH - AP Business Writer

Saudi Arabia and allied oil producing countries face a decision on whether to extend production cuts. And that could push oil prices higher as the summer travel season increases demand for fuel and as the U.S. presidential election contest heats up. The OPEC+ alliance, made up of members of the Vienna-based producers cartel and allied countries, including Russia, is holding an online meeting but the cuts in question are a matter for a smaller group led by Saudi Arabia. Those countries previously cut some 2.2 million barrels per day to support prices that are weaker than the Saudis and other coalition members would like.

Democrats wanted an agreement on using artificial intelligence. It went nowhere

  • DAN MERICA - Associated Press

As campaigns nationwide experimented with artificial intelligence earlier this year, the Democratic National Committee approached their committees with a request: Sign onto guidelines to use the technology in a “responsible” way. The draft agreement, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, was hardly full of revolutionary ideas. But the plan went nowhere. The proposal’s demise highlighted both internal divisions over campaign tactics and the party’s uncertainty over how to best use AI.

Rescue crews work to free people trapped under a collapsed apartment building in Istanbul

  • AP

Television images show emergency workers trying to rescue people trapped under a collapsed apartment building in Istanbul. Firefighters shifted rubble by hand from the flattened three-story building in Kucukcekmece on the city’s European side on Sunday. Two injured people were pulled from the debris, broadcaster CNN Turk reported. The Istanbul governor’s office said the structure collapsed at 8:40 a.m. local time. The cause was not immediately clear. More than 59,000 people were killed last year when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of southern Turkey and neighboring Syria. The disaster highlighted the poor enforcement of building regulations in Turkey.

Makhachev beats Poirier by submission at UFC 302 to defend lightweight title

  • By BRIAN MAHONEY - AP Sports Writer

Islam Makhachev defended his lightweight title and extended his winning streak to 14 fights, third-longest in UFC history, by getting a submission over Dustin Poirier in the fifth round at UFC 302. Overcoming one of the sport’s accomplished veterans and a crowd that was against him from the start, Makhachev ran his record to 26-1 and said afterward he may move up in weight for another challenge. There’s certainly not much left for him at 155 pounds, where he defended his title for the third time and showed why he is ranked as the pound-for-pound best in UFC. Poirier fell short in his third attempt for the undisputed title.

Serbia populists seek to cement power in vote in Belgrade, key cities after facing fraud accusations

  • By JOVANA GEC - Associated Press

Voters in Serbia are casting ballots in a rerun election in the capital, Belgrade, and in dozens of other cities and towns, with ruling right-wing populists seeking to cement their already vast hold on power. The vote in Belgrade on Sunday is being held again after reports of widespread irregularities last December triggered political tensions and accusations that President Aleksandar Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party rigged the vote. Also up for grabs are more than 80 municipal councils and city halls in two other key cities. If the opposition manages to wrestle away at least some of the local councils, not to mention in big cities, it would be a significant shift.

Iran's hard-line former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registers for June 28 presidential election

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

Iran’s hard-line former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered as a possible candidate for the June 28 presidential election, seeking to regain the country’s top political position after a helicopter crash killed the nation’s president and seven others. The populist former leader’s registration puts pressure on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In office, Ahmadinejad openly challenged the 85-year-old cleric, and his attempt to run in 2021 was barred by authorities. The firebrand, Holocaust-questioning politician return also comes during a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, its arming of Russia in its war on Ukraine and its wide-reaching crackdowns on dissent.

In a rare step, 3 South Dakota counties are set to vote on counting ballots by hand

  • By JACK DURA - Associated Press

Voters in at least three South Dakota counties will decide whether ballots in future elections will be counted by hand. It's a rare step even as others in the U.S. have considered a move to counting by hand in the wake of former President Donald Trump's false claims of fraud in 2020. Only a few counties have seriously considered the switch, but most have ditched the idea as too costly. Experts say it's also much slower and less accurate that using machine tabulators. In South Dakota's June 4 primary, voters in Gregory, Haakon and Tripp counties will decide whether to prohibit tabulating machines and require hand counting.

Throughout the seven-month Israel-Hamas war, Israel has been heavily criticized for alleged wrongdoing by its forces. Israel says it can investigate itself and has launched many probes into the conduct of its soldiers. But in the wake of a deadly strike on a tent camp in Rafah, there's mounting international skepticism that Israel can fairly and diligently pursue those investigations.
