Agents for Dover BROCKMAN'S CASTLE STREET and HIGH STREET. DOVER BURIAL COMMITTEE, A meeting of the Dover Burial Committee was held on Wednesday, Councillor Powell presiding. Others present were Alderman Dawes. Councillor Skey and Canon Elnor. Fees Received.

The Deputy Town Clerk gave the following statement of fees received during the quarter ended 30th June: -Interment fees, £128 against £110 0s. 6d, in the same quarter last year; Ministers' fees £60 7s. 6d. (£58 2s. grave spaces, £168 and headstones, £127 total £295 17s.

3d. Last year's total, which included an additional £25 for permanent grave spaces miscellaneous receipts, 17s. amounted to £450 2s. 1d. Improved Zeebrugge Plot.

The Deputy Town Clerk read a letter from the Imperial War Graves Commission, expressing appreciation of the improvements carried out adjacent to the Zeebrugge plot since the Corporation took over the cemetery, for which they understood the Corporation were proposing to make no additional charge for maintenance. They were also interested to restriction on the size of memorials in the vicinity of the plot, The Clerk said he had Buckland churchiown received a letter from the Rector of Buckland, stating that the Church Council asked that the Committee should reconsider their decision to reduce from 15s. 7s. 6d. a quarter the payment in respect of heating, lighting and cleaning the church for funerals.

They pointed out that the Council was saved a very considerable sum of money through not having to erect and maintain a cemetery chapel, as they had to do in other cemeteries. Alderman Dawes asked what about other denominations, who held funeral claim services in churches. They did not anything. He moved that the matter be deferred until a better attended meeting. This was carried.

Extra Men. Alderman Dawes moved that the Rota Committee consider the question of keeping temporary men on a little longer until the work of cleaning up the burial grounds was done, and this was carried. He also moved that the extra men at St. James' Cemetery be made permanent. The Deputy Town Clerk said the Rota Committee wished the Committee to discuss that matter.

was decided to recommend that the man, H. Jenkins, be made permanent as from 1st August, at the same wages as the other men, £2 6s. a week, as compared with £2 now paid to him. Cowgate Hill Superintendent. the motion of Alderman Dawes, it On was decided that the Cowgate Hill Superintendent be allowed a fortnight's holiday instead of a week, to bring him into line with other superintendents.

Buckland Closed Churchyard. The Deputy Town Clerk said the Churchwardens had submitted an account for expenses £1 14s. which was an excess of incurred for the quarter, amounting to £1 11s. 9d. over the amount approved by the Town The excess was made up of £1 11s.

for sharpening and repairing lawn mower, and 9d. for labour. The Surdid not think the sum unreasonable veyor and recommended that it be paid. It was decided to allow the excess. In Private.

The following items were taken in pri-Cemeteries: (a) regulations to be considered, (b) perpetual upkeep of graves -statement; Staff- -Superintendent's commission. THE DOVER SOLDIERS' HOME, Five hundred years ago the famous Maison Dieu, at Dover, used to offer hospitality to soldiers of the British Armies in a religious atmosphere. This is the work that the Soldiers' Home has been carrying on for the last fifty-seven years. Its most valuable services were given during the period of the Great War, and very many ex-service men and serving soldiers must have happy memories of the hospitality of the Home, its home-like comfort, and the sympathetic friendship of the Lady Superintendent, Miss Hayes, and her mother. Founded in 1878 by a number of generous and seriously minded officers, who subscribed the money for buying and equipping the house in Snargate the Home gives cheap lodging and light meals, with nonalcoholic drinks, to serving soldiers.

It is open daily from early morning until near midnight, but it is not endowed and the heavy expense of its maintenance is never, in peace-time, covered by the small profits derived from the beds and refreshments. It is well patronised by the men of the four battalions stationed at Dover, and is generously supported by the for Brigadier financial and Officers. Beyond this it looks support to well-wishers of the general public. But as years go by, it is losing one by one its more generous patrons and the Committee are finding it hard to find others to take their place. The Home is now faced with a financial crisis, and the Committee recognise that if they cannot obtain further help the day is approaching when they must close it.

It would be a thousand pities if this valuable institution at the Gateway of England had to close its doors. Donations should be sent to the Lady Superintendent, The Dover Soldiers' Home, 157, Snargate Dover, or to the Hon. Treasurer, Col. F. E.
