The history of Leatherman
Leatherman gets its name from American Timothy S. Leatherman, a mechanical engineer. Together with Steve Berliner, he founded the Leatherman Tool Group in 1983. Timothy came up with the idea of designing a scout knife with pliers in 1975, during a trip through Europe and the Middle East he made with his wife.
During his trip, Leatherman made frequent use of a simple pocket knife. Among other things, he used this knife to make repairs to his car and pipe work. In his mind, things had to be a lot easier. He got to work and developed a prototype with a pair of pliers as its base, called Mr. Crunch. This one he kept perfecting. Leatherman received its first patent in America in 1980, yet it wasn't until 1938 that the Pocket Survival Tool (PST) - the first product created by the Leatherman Tool Group - was introduced.
The introduction of Leatherman's PST proved to be a hit. In fact, by 1984 it had already sold 30,000 units. This allowed the company behind the brand to develop new products and continue to grow. And it did. It is now a well-established brand and all kinds of pocket knives and multitools from Leatherman are sold all over the world.
