A friend order two lots of coins for me. and that is it. He has a paypal account, I don't. But my self, no. Never order anything in my name. I got the two lots a long time ago. In fact my wife got me one that had to be close to 6 or 7 years ago. And about 2 years after she died I had a friend order me one.

It is, what it is, or is it.

I still buy from ebay, but sparingly. I have since moved towards reputable dealers who offer lifetime guarantees and are well known in the numismatic community as well as the academic community. The other place, albeit very expensive, is auctions such as CNG, Baldwin's, Heritage, etc to name a few...

With ebay, you really should know what you are buying, otherwise you are bound to be scammed. Sometimes, there are gems to be found, especially when the seller doesn't know what he is selling Am I the only one left, who does not buy from E-bay.??? – Numista (2) . I have bought several scarce and rare coins for bargain prices on ebay due to the fact that most people didn't recognize the coin...

I have never bought specific coins from eBay. I once bought a 25lb mixed lot, which was being sold by a legitimate coin shop through eBay, and the only reason I went through eBay and not directly through the shop, was that the bag was $50 cheaper on eBay.

For specific coins I much rather go to my dealer where i can see and hold the coin before paying.

I never bought from eBay until around October-2014. Mainly because I initially focused on Mexican coinage, and for that is always better to buy locally (in person or national auction sites) as the selection is always better.

For everything else Numista swaps where all that I needed. But then it was getting harder to get coins from countries I didn't have, as most users get a single coin from those for their collections and not for swap. So eBay became my source. For most countries I've bought so far I've been lucky in auctions or low prices, most of them under 15$. Then for the rarest ones I've had to be patient and stalk the auctions.

For some rare coins, like those from Imperial or Soviet Russia brief Territories I asked some users for local auction sites as often they are 1/10th the price of eBay as offer is larger and demand lower; not to mention the Rouble devaluation helps the prices.

eBay is my main income of coins, I do well from it. You do need to have a keen eye though and be wary of poor pics although sometimes they're worth a punt and can save you a lot of money !

I buy fairly evenly between my local store and Ebay. When things come into my local store I tend to jump on it because I know what I am getting...but then I will usually pay a bit more. Ebay is great however because within my collecting domain I am fairly knowledgable so I dont buy things that are fishy. I tend to buy from the same sellers over and over because I have developed a certain level of trust. Just be smart about it that is all and you will get some great stuff!

I recently purchased on Ebay a lot of Silver coins (19) from a price that was about 10% above the bullion price plus it was 2-3$ shipping.

Coins were betweeN VG+ - VF.

I will considered a good deal based on the price paid and the shipping cost, If I will buy separated it will be more than 20$ only on shipping plus prices may vary...

As everyone says, w just have to be aware of the seller reputation and what you are buying.

Cheers.

Sometimes there are great lots on Ebay which you can catch for nice price.
I made there about 40 purchases. And Im very happy.
For example, I got there Lybia 1 para of Mahmud II just for $14, Morocco 2x 1 dirkhem in very nice condition, just for $ 16 !!! Egyptian 5 piastres with shaded denomination ( very rare )
and some other stuff which I missed very much.

If you buy from rated, experienced sellers, I think Ebay is a good place...

But they have some ugly rules, for example you cannot buy Sudan, Cuba, etc. items. Once i used a word " Sudan" in shipping details... OMG !!! They blocked my paypal, then asked me to send them my personal information, where Im working, who am I and so on...
It was terrible...
but most funny thing, that who wants to sell Sudanese coins, indicate " South Sudan" !!!! and no problem !!!
OMG OMG OMG

i do regularly buy from Ebay, aside from Aucrion houses and coin shows its the only place where I get coins from. One problem is there is just soo much stuff on Ebay and I consider 95%+ as junk and as I dont want to browse for full days I have some saved search results and it notifies me when one of the coins come up on Ebay. In the past I used to make my living with coins on Ebay buying badly described and badly photographed coins (that were actually in very high grade) and selling them at 5 or 10 times the price I paid for, problem was again that it just took too much of my time. On occasions there are some absolute bargains to be made on Ebay but you have to be very patient, need some knowledge on ebay (what keywords to put in search bar and so on) and of course luck. Ill never forget a coin that I bought for 30USD (turned out to be a scarcer pattern) and sold for 1400USD Am I the only one left, who does not buy from E-bay.??? – Numista (15) for beginners it can be a bit scary, postage costs can be high for lower value coins especially if you buy from abroad, theres plenty of fakes so newer collectors might tumble for one of those, I did twice at the beginning of my collecting. Most of the times I try to avoid very reputable dealers simply because they have a lot of followers and they get crazy amounts of bids and the end result prices are often just over the roof.

I think eBay becomes more necessary depending on where you live.

Here in my town there is only 1 store that sells coins, and they usually only have common Canadian and US coins, aside from a slightly wider Mexican selection. But for that it is best to use the local auction sites, but for anything else you need to travel a lot to find selling spots and conventions, risking to be robbed on the way as a lot of thieves attend those events simply to profile buyers and rob them.

So eBay can be a lifesaver for small towns like mine.

I've purchased several bulk world coins lots and a good number of modern commemoratives and semi-collectible bullion coins on E-Bay. Had pretty good luck, overall. Sold some of my extras there, too, when E-Bay sent me a promotional order, $10-off a future purchase for each sale you make within 2 weeks (up to 5 sales), so that was like getting 50 bucks for free.

Some sellers that I would recommend for modern coins:
- mcm (Modern Coin Mart)
- topworldcoins_com
- son-montuno

Sellers that I would NOT recommend:
- lccoins - They use stock photos and the quality of the coins they send is below what they advertise. Also, they put you into their mailing database and send you their marketing spam (which, btw, is explicitly forbidden by EBay policies)
- firstmoderncoin - Again, stock photos and over-hyped coins

Lessons learned:
- Stay away from any seller who uses stock photos
- Don't be afraid to ask for better quality pictures (unless it's bulk coin lots, then it's not worth the time)
- If in doubt, ask any questions before you bid
- If buying something expensive, video the unboxing
- Sniping is real. Low-ballers aside, most of the winning Auction bids are places at the last 30 seconds

Low-feedback (less than 300) sellers: I wouldn't buy anything expensive from them, but they are also the ones where you find the best bargains.

Sellers with less-than 98% positive feedback: Not worth taking your chances with them. Learn from other buyers' mistakes. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
